Summer August E-Diary by Artist Pamela Gladding

When steamy August arrives, I always think of lilies and tomatoes. I've planted a lot of different varieties of both and couldn't pick a favorite. Many of the daylillies were acquired by exchanging varieties with friends.

A rare native turk's cap. L.canadense, I dug out from along our fencerow. It seems to be happy in the garden island. This year I was anxious to see a new variety I planted last fall; "Orienpet": a cross between an oriental and trumpet. I planted them at the edge of the porch so that we could enjoy their fragrance. We were not disappointed! Hummingbirds love the lilies. Their beak is well suited for getting the nectar. Daylilies are nice to use in a low bouquet for the table. Floating the flower heads with a short stem in a low decorative bowl makes a very pretty arrangement, and you can still see your guests when you are having dinner!

When finally sitting down for dinner, we are enjoying the heirloom tomato varieties. I especiallly like "German Johnson" and Brandywine". One variety called "Sweet Thing" is exactly as it claims to be. "Mr Stripey" always brightens up the tomato platter. I'd like to share one of my favorite recipes.

Tomatoes with red peppers and anchovy sauce
  • 4 red bell peppers
  • 1 T capers
  • 1 tin anchovies
  • 3 T olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, mashed

Roast the red pepers until the skin is black. Put them in a paper bag to steam. When cool, remove the blacked skin, chop and set aside.

Heat the oil over low heat, add the garlic and anchovies and mash into a puree. Add the capers and chopped red peppers. Just mix until warm.

Pour over sliced tomatoes. You can add fresh chopped basil, and feta or mozzarella cheese to garnish.
