SUMMER
June is the month that peonies are in full bloom here in my garden in Pennsylvania...
When I first moved here in 1989 and looked at the empty field that would become my garden that you see here, I knew that it had to have lots of peonies. I especially like the single petal varieties, but I have several fragrant double blooms. One is white with a tiny splash of deep red at its center. I planted it off the end of the porch, and its perfume is wonderful.

I like to complement the peonies with irises, Dutch, Siberian and German. This year I saw the first bloom on "Louisanna" iris called "Ballerina". It was exquisite, but the color clashed with the peony next to it, so I will move it later this summer. The pink dianthus in the foreground is "Bath's Pink". Its soft color and delicate flower is a nice counter-point to the robust and dramatic peonies.
As early June continues into summer, I look forward to the baby birds emerging from their nest, and the new color changes in the garden.
